A computer reads the whole book and guesses its language in seconds. A US library shelves books in its national language — English — so anything else steps aside here, automatically.
A language-understanding model — trained with help from Harvard researchers — reads the title, description, and subject tags, and sorts the book into a topic, the same way a librarian would.
Some whole topics — history, politics, religion, medicine, law, and a few others — are excluded on principle, no matter how good the book is. About 70% of what’s left falls here. It’s nothing personal: the topic itself isn’t in scope.
A matching system checks the book against more than 180,000 official subject headings used by libraries worldwide, looking for anything on the excluded list. About half of what remains is caught here.
For the roughly 1 in 10 books still standing, we pull the entire text out of the scanned pages so it can actually be read — not just skimmed by its cover blurb.
A frontier AI reads the entire book, cover to cover — hunting for anything the earlier gates could have missed, and scoring how educational and well-made the book really is.
One last human-and-AI check confirms the book truly earns the Ꭰ-SAFE certification before it can ever reach the shelf.
